Last December, a 12-year-old boy in a village in Hunan province fatally stabbed his mother more than 20 times with cleaver at home after she whipped him for smoking.

The incident shocked many in China and sparked a public outcry after the teenager, surnamed Wu, was released without charge nine days after the murder because he could not be prosecuted.

The boy's school refused to take him back due to protests from other parents, who fear that the boy could harm their children.

The similarities in both cases have prompted net users to call on the government to revise the the current legal system to better handle juvenile crime cases.

'There must be heavier consequences for juvenile criminals. They can't just be released back to school like nothing happened,' one person commented on Weibo.

'It's time to take juvenile delinquency more seriously,' another said.
